How we build
The strength is in the parts you don't see.
Anyone can screw down decking. A deck that stays solid and safe for years is decided underneath — in the footings, the ledger and the framing. That is where we do our best work, and it is why our decks do not bounce, sink or pull away from the house.

- A flashed, bolted ledger — the connection to the house done right, so water stays out and the deck stays put.
- Protected, square framing — joists tuned for a solid feel and taped to shed water where boards meet frame.

What wood do you build decks in?
We build in western red cedar for its natural resistance to rot and insects and its warm, finished look, on framing built from pressure-treated lumber rated for ground contact. If you would prefer a composite decking surface on a solid wood frame, we build that too — we will walk you through the trade-offs during the quote.
Do I need a permit to build a deck on the Peninsula?
It depends on the height and size of the deck and your municipality. Larger and raised decks in South Surrey, White Rock and Delta often require a building permit, while small ground-level decks may not. We flag what your project is likely to need during the quote so nothing stalls partway through.
How long does a cedar deck last?
A cedar deck built on footings set below frost, with a properly flashed ledger and protected joists, will typically give you well over a decade of solid service with light upkeep. Sealing the cedar every couple of seasons keeps its colour and extends the life of the surface boards.
Should I build in cedar or composite?
Cedar gives you a warm, natural look and can be sanded and refinished, but wants occasional sealing. Composite looks less natural but asks for very little maintenance. Both sit on the same solid frame when we build them — we help you weigh look versus upkeep for how you will actually use the deck.
Can you build over or replace an old deck?
Usually we remove the old deck rather than build over it, because the value is in a sound frame and proper footings — the parts you cannot see. We tear out the old structure, check the footings and ledger, and rebuild it right, hauling the old materials away.
Are your railings and stairs built to code?
Yes. Railing height, baluster spacing and stair rise and run are built to the BC Building Code — the details that keep a deck safe and pass inspection. We would not build them any other way.
How long does it take to build a deck?
Most residential decks are built in several days to a couple of weeks depending on size, height, railings and stairs, and whether footings and a permit are involved. We give you the working timeline in your written quote before we start.
