Most fences fail in the same places — posts that heave, fasteners that rust and bleed, and boards that shrink into gaps. We build to beat all three. Western red cedar for its natural resistance to rot and insects, posts set deep in concrete, and stainless or coated fasteners that will not streak your boards with rust.

- Posts below frost — set in concrete and drained so winter heave does not push your fence out of line.

How long does a western red cedar fence last?
A properly built western red cedar fence — posts set below frost, board-on-board construction, capped tops and stainless or coated fasteners — will typically stand well past a decade, and often two, with light upkeep. Cedar's natural oils resist rot and insects, which is why we build in it.
What is a board-on-board cedar fence?
Board-on-board means the fence boards overlap slightly rather than butting edge to edge. As cedar naturally shrinks and moves over the seasons, there are no gaps that open up — so you keep full privacy and a solid, finished look from both sides for the life of the fence.
Do I need a permit to build a fence on the Peninsula?
Most residential fences within standard height limits do not require a permit, but height rules — especially on front yards and corner lots — vary by municipality across South Surrey, White Rock and Delta. How long does it take to install a cedar fence?
Most residential runs are installed in one to three working days once we start, depending on length, gates and how the old fence comes out. Concrete-set posts are given time to cure before panels take full load. We give you the working timeline in your written quote.
Should I stain or seal a new cedar fence?
It is optional. Left alone, cedar weathers to a soft silver-grey. A stain or sealer keeps more of the warm cedar tone and adds a little protection. We usually suggest letting a new fence dry out for a season first, then sealing — and we are happy to advise on products.
Do you remove and haul away my old fence?
Yes. Tear-out, disposal and site cleanup are built into the quote. We pull the old fence, dig out old posts and concrete, and leave the property tidy — you are not left with a pile to deal with.
Are you insured?
Yes. Ironwood Grounds is WorkSafeBC insured, which covers our crew while they work on your property — worth confirming with any contractor before work begins.
